Reef

Reef

Reef is one of several cats who has come to us from another shelter that was unable to get him adopted.  Like Bello, he was trapped and neutered, but was so fearful that potential adopters were unwilling to consider him.  He came into our care, caged in the Connor building while we gave him a chance to get used to the people and the smells and the other cats. There, he was very vocal, letting us know very clearly that he wanted out of there!  Volunteers and Kitty Comforters visited him, but some cats just hate cages – no matter that ours are much larger than most commercial ones – and Reef couldn’t wait to get out.

Don't bug me...

Release day came, and Reef didn’t hang around long. He quickly discovered that most of the shyer cats prefer to hang out in the Old Rabbit Area, and that there are lots of places where he can hide behind a drape or in an upper-level basket. And there he would probably have remained, if not for Carol Porteous.

Climbing down onto Carol's lap

Carol is a favourite with many of the front courtyard cats – actually, she’s a favourite everywhere she goes! – but she is usually on shift for feeding in the front, and the cats gather at the gate as she arrives. Like former volunteer Lori (now living in Alberta) she brings both freshly cooked chicken and fish, and some of the tastiest of the commercial catfoods. She has a particular gift with the very shy ones, and it’s thanks to her that I have begun to know little tripod Chutney, and Reef.

Leg-rubs

She calls him Reefie, and his head immediately pops up from the basket where he’s hiding. Within a couple of minutes, he makes his way to her, climbing down from her shoulder to her lap, and then weaving around her legs.  Because he is so confident in her presence, he is also comfortable with me, and before long I have a new lap-sitter.

Under the heat-lamp

Reef is about 5 years old, and a skinny boy; possibly life in the wild has left its mark, and it will be good to see if we can get a little more condition on him.  My guess is that he is actually a stray rather than a feral, and is now remembering what it is like to have humans giving him some love.  It’s heart-warming to see how handsome Bello, in the back courtyard, has blossomed – to the point that he’s now wearing his “adoptable” bandanna at the weekends.  Reef is still a bit too wary for that, but when there are few people around I can call his name and he will emerge and offer leg-rubs, and then lap-time.

Watching us from above

It doesn’t take much to spook him, and there are other cats like Cuddles and Westin who get a bit jealous (Westin demonstrates his jealousy by sitting on my feet!), but every encounter makes him a little more confident.  He’s not ready yet to go further than the doorway, but he’s made such progress in the last while that I am confident that our patience will eventually be rewarded by a cat who is no longer “too feral to adopt”.

Love Attack

The warning collar says that new girl Peaches
needs to be approached with caution  (KN)
What are the primary words that come up when you think of cats?  My bet is that they would include “cuddly”, “soft”, “purring”, “stroke” and many more like that.  They’re certainly in the minds of our Sunday visitors, who are sometimes disappointed to be told that they can’t pet all the cats! Since the return of our weekend visiting hours, we’ve needed to be able to have guests identify some of the cats that are particularly reactive, offering slaps and swats instead of (sometimes as well as) purrs - and most of those cats are now sporting collars as a visual warning.

JJ wears a warning collar
- but Kasha needs no warning!  (LBF)
But sometimes it’s not so much about the petting itself, as about the relationship of pet-ee and petter! JJ stands out with her handsome blue collar, and all the volunteers know that we need to move carefully around her.  But when Kasha is anywhere close, JJ is a different and totally cuddly cat; her only frustration is that she wants Kasha to sit and pet her all the time!  She has now begun to snuggle with other volunteers if Kasha’s not available, and most of us have learned to let JJ pet the human, and not vice versa!

Cole "come pet me" look - MW
Cole was an angry, reactive boy when he first came to us; our black panther has changed a lot since then. Mostly he hangs out in the DoubleWide laundry room, but occasionally he is very emotionally needy, and begs for attention. He can often be found at the gate – not to go gate-busting, as he used to, but to welcome whoever comes through, and demand a cuddle. Like a small child, saying “Up! Up!”, he stretches up, wanting to be lifted; he’s one of those cats who likes being held upright, and butts his head under your chin. Sadly, he’s a big boy, and there’s only so much cuddling you can do; he wants to be walked around, and when you sit, he’s off to find someone else to pay attention to him.

Tugboat loves his cuddles with Debbie  (DW)
More vocal in his demands, Tugboat is another who is insistent on having a cuddle when he needs it. Our old boy is getting arthritic and unsteady; he shuttles between the Double-Wide couch, (where he snuggles with Plum), and his favourite basket in the Tea-Room.  When he wants attention, his creaky voice can’t be ignored, and he’s feather-light in your arms. There are lots of people who will give Tuggy any amount of cuddle time.

Wylee having a very important
discussion with Louise (BC)
Sweet Wylee is not often seen during visiting hours – he hides in the Newcomers area, which is a cats-only zone, and if he is seen, he is often confused with Gizmo. But in the evening, when the med-staff are doing their rounds, he will sometimes emerge; if there’s a tea-break he will check who’s attending, and if it’s Louise, he will leap on her lap, scoot up to her shoulder, and bury his head in her neck, begging for petting. Molly will do, at a pinch; I’ve occasionally been favoured; but Louise is definitely his Perfect Person, and Cuddler #1.

Roe is blissed-out
when she's in Justin's lap  (JS)
Roe is usually one of the cats who waits at the front courtyard main gate; she likes visitors and the attention and petting she can get while she’s around them. But certain people are her priority. If Justin arrives, she is anxious for all his focus; she is quick to monopolize his lap and to squirm around being cute, and receiving the caresses she wants. If she knows he’s around but not with her, she sulks, waiting for him to come back to her.

Sometimes shy, sometimes cuddly  (KN)
Last week I was doing a back-pen shift and got ambushed by Odin outside Pen 1. He was very insistent that I sit with him and give cuddles – something he doesn’t always do. Odin tends to be a loner; he doesn’t hate other cats, but he’s not part of a social crowd. He’s also wary with humans, but Alice has spent a lot of time with him, and his comfort with her has transferred to other people. He suffers, to a certain extent, from black-cat-itis – when people can’t immediately ID a black cat, it’s easy to overlook them altogether.  Odin is worth hunting for!

Marty & Merrin love snuggles  (JS)
When Justin can’t be found petting Roe in the front courtyard, he can often be found smothered by cats in the Single-Wide. Most of the love-attack cats in the Sanctuary want to be the ONLY cat – and when another cat appears on the scene, they move. The Cuddle Crew in the Single-Wide love being together;  piling on to a chair together is bested only by piling on top of a human on their chair. If they’re athletic, they jump up; if they’re not, there are steps, and ways of edging into the pile. If they are late-comers (yes, I mean you, Bossanova!) they approach from above and sneak down over the shoulder. They actually prefer being crowded on the chair to using the couch on the deck – but there they also have to give space to NikkiSixToes, Shaggy and sometimes big black Kiefer.

Cuddles is zoned-out...   (KN)
It's perhaps unfortunate that the cat called Cuddles is another of the collared ones, who is approachable only when blissed-out on catnip!

Wherever you go in the Sanctuary, there are always ferals who will hold back, reactive cats who will go “purr-purr-purr-SLAP!” and the beloved ones who come to us looking for love.

Hello, Cuddles

Cuddles? Is that your real name?

Cuddles   (KN)

Your sign says “surrendered for aggression”.  Quite a conundrum.

Seasoned cat handlers always know to proceed with caution.  Animals-love-me type individuals insist on reaching for petting immediately.

PC

On first impression, she looks like a bright-eyed tuxedo cat waiting attentively for visitors.  After entering, she’s over eager for physical contact.  She’ll want pets, even nudging your hand for them.  Sit back for a moment and she will body rub everything in the vicinity.  Even the litter box!  A brief brushing is welcome, too.  Sometimes, she’ll even give a happy tail shake.  (The same shake some other cats make wet sprinkles with.  Thankfully, hers is dry.)

So far, it seems the latter group won.

KN

At this point, Cuddles will either face the door or jump into the tree.  Now is the ideal time to entice her with toys, grass, or a treat.  Beef flavours and liquid foods are her preference.  Once satisfied, she’ll groom and hop to the top of the tree for a nap.

Here’s the strange part: Touch her again and there’s a 75% chance you’ll get hissed at.  Persist and you’ll get swatted.  I’ve spoken to a few people and she consistently gives the same reactions.  The cautious group was right.  The latter group can pick their pride off the floor and leave.  You can still use a toy to pacify her.

Feather toys are the best  (PC)

She desires human attention and plenty of playtime.  Toys hold her attention for 5-10 minutes.  In a way, she’s a large kitten who needs to flex her hunting skills and relieve her cat instincts.  If the prey is your hand… well, good luck.

Cuddles gets over-stimulated from physical touch easily.  An analogy to over-petting a cat would be rubbing your hands together.  Doing it briefly can be comfortable or soothing.  Continuously rub your hands and they will get hot and irritating.  The threshold is different for everyone, and any number of reasons could be the cause. Cuddles growls and goes on high alert if she sees any nearby cats. Competition and lack of resources can turn sweet cats into sourpusses.

An unwelcome visitor (PC)

If a feral hisses from a distance, we think it’s a normal “stay away!” sign.  If a cat hisses in breathing distance, it’s considered extra offensive, even though the intended meaning is the same.  A misinterpretation on reading cat body language, and hissing became the efficient means of telling humans “no”.

All these habits make her hard to befriend. I feel her dream is to have a human who understands her, spoils her with cat luxuries, and stands at her beck and call.  After all, Cuddles won’t chase you out like other aggressive cats, nor wedge herself in a corner.

Cuddles "playing cute"  (PC)

While it’s too easy to blame problems on the victim who can’t speak up, or in this case, the cat, it’s actually quite difficult to unlearn things.  An average human takes 2-3 times longer to ditch an unwanted habit than to learn it.  With cats, it takes months, even years.  Cuddles is learning our routines here. There is a race against time on our part, as we have to make her feel confident enough so she doesn’t feel threatened by other cats when it’s release time.  She’s already brave to interact with strangers and the items we gift her.  We just have to keep up the momentum, so she can finally be happy and cuddly.
