We had a good friendship when she lived at our block, just as she did with Marisa and James on "her" side of the building.

We first became acquainted because she kept bullying one of my cats, who I admit could be a bit annoying. One day I yelled at her to stop and then I felt bad about it. So from then on what I did instead when she had him cornered was to say in a bright voice hello hello oh how are you, etc. etc. The tone of my voice was so different from the interaction that it distracted her enough for him to run away, but it also made her interested in me. Overtime she became a frequent visitor to my patio. I could open the door and put food down beside her and once she even took it from my hand, but I was not allowed to touch her.

. Even that changed. She used to watch me grooming and petting Sparky in the doorway and she was very curious. She could see how happy he was. So one time she started rubbing her cheek against the patio window, and I put my fingers up and made scratching motions on my side of the glass. This became our way of cuddling. Faithful on her side of the glass and me on mine with her cheek being scratched, in theory, by my safely shielded fingers.

Sparky never forgave her for bullying him, and I think fighting with him through the window was probably as much fun as being scratched or fed by me.

I was very sad when Faithful went to RAPS, only because I missed her. I was also very grateful that she ended up in such a safe environment. I am so, so happy to hear that my old friend has begun to find her confidence again. Though always wary, she had an amazing confidence. I am delighted that you are getting to see that side of her at last.Mael Brigdehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14027633351328436270noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4495732111192964121.post-18808611993942539672021-02-26T10:13:07.165-08:002021-02-26T10:13:07.165-08:00Thank you for sharing! Since this post was written, she has relaxed a lot and has learned to give more and clearer warnings to people. In fact, I consider her to be as safe for visitors to interact with as most of the other tame cats are. As easily over-stimulated as she is, I haven't seen her bite or scratch without giving clear warnings first.

(2) Pay careful attention for tail-flicking, ear-flicking, and growling. These are usually her first signals of discontent, but please remember that they're *not* threats to hurt you. Her typical threats are a long, low-pitched meow, swatting, and pretending to bite.

(3) The easiest way to make friends with her is to let her sit on your lap without petting her; this avoids any chance of over-stimulating her. However, when she's in the right mood and on the right lap, she can sometimes enjoy a lot of petting.

In my experience, she is most likely to enjoy petting on the back of her neck and under her chin. The top of her head can also be a good place.

(4) She is anxious. You can reassure her by making slow blinks; she understands what they mean and likes to exchange them with trusted humans. Try not to surprise her when you reach out to pet her.

(5) Expect her to complain if she isn't ready to leave when you are. She will jump off if you stand up fully, though.

(6) She does *not* like to be picked up.

(7) She might growl while she stands up to reposition herself on your lap. This is more common when your lap isn't fully horizontal or your knees aren't locked together. If this happens to you, rest assured that you probably haven't done anything wrong. She knows that people tend to stay still when they're growled at, so she growls to ensure that you won't move while she repositions herself.

This behavior can be surprising even for cat-savvy people because it defies our expectations of what cat growling means. I think it's endearingly creative, though. <3Colinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4495732111192964121.post-70074692126697697432020-01-23T14:53:07.427-08:002020-01-23T14:53:07.427-08:00You can donate to the cat sanctuary through this l...You can donate to the cat sanctuary through this link! https://www.rapsbc.com/donate-to-the-raps-cat-sanctuary/
thank you so much Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4495732111192964121.post-81267750536777191282020-01-23T09:04:41.670-08:002020-01-23T09:04:41.670-08:00How can I send a wee donation to help you all in y...How can I send a wee donation to help you all in your caring work?
